PostHeaderIcon A Good Tree Service Will Help You Conserve Trees

With the presence of a huge number of different environmental organizations that are dedicated to conserving trees, it’s easy for us to tell that trees are really a great concern. Trees don’t only provide us the clean fresh air that we breathe but as well as the building materials, shelter, and herbal products that we need. If you have trees at home that you want to preserve, you can do so through the help of a good tree service.

When rain happens abundantly, plants tend to grow excess leaves, which crowd them up. This in turn causes their chances of survival to decrease. Aside from keeping trees alive, tree trimming services also help trees to look more beautiful. In addition, they also help enhance the growth of trees. PostHeaderIcon The Importance of a Soil Test

The foundation of a healthy lawn is the soil. Soil is vital to the development of your lawn’s root system. In order to grow that healthy and beautiful lawn, it is important to know that your soil has all of the right ingredients.

Having your soil tested saves you time, money and aggravation. A soil test will tell you what your soil has and what your soil is lacking. A soil test eliminates all of the guesswork. The soil test will tell you the levels of pH, phosphorous, potassium and organic matter in your soil. It will also tell you the percentage of sand, silt and clay in your soil. Knowing what your soil contains is invaluable information. It gives you the foresight to know what ingredients you need to add to your soil.

Who performs the soil test?
There are several different options for having your soil tested.
Home Soil Test - You can perform the soil test yourself at home. Soil test kits can be purchased through your local garden center. This is the least costly option.
Local Agricultural Office/Local University - You can take the soil sample yourself and send it off to your local agricultural office or a local university to be tested. This is more costly than performing a home soil test yourself, but it is also a more comprehensive test.
Use a Private Lab -You can take the soil sample yourself and send it off to a private lab to be tested. A private lab will provide the same comprehensive results as your local agricultural office or local university, but this is also the most costly option.

The home soil test is only able to provide you with your soil’s pH level. To make sure your soil has all the ingredients necessary to grow your healthy and beautiful lawn, you really need additional information.

The information you receive from your agricultural office, local university or private lab is more comprehensive. It takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks to get your results back. The report provides information about your soil as well as recommendations on what your soil needs (i.e. lime, sulfur, fertilizer or organic matter).

How do I take a soil sample?
The information you get from your soil sample test is only as good as the soil samples you take. You will get the most accurate results if you take a total of 4-6 samples from your front and backyard.

Make sure you use clean equipment to take the soil sample. The worst thing you can do is to use a piece of equipment that has rust or other chemical residue on it. This will taint your sample and your results will be inaccurate.

You should use a core sampler, trowel or a shovel to take your soil sample. At a minimum remove the top 3 inches of soil before you take your sample for the soil test. You can mix the different soil samples together in one container. After you mix the samples take a few cups of the mixture and put it in a container to do your home soil test or to send to the lab. If you have a specific area of your yard that is a problem, keep that sample separate from the other samples you have taken.

What does the soil test report tell me?
Your soil test report will provide you with the following valuable information.
Your soil’s pH level - This explains if your soil is acidic (pH level less than 6.7), alkaline (pH level greater than 7.3) or neutral (pH level 6.7 – 7.3). If your soil is acidic, you need to add lime. If your soil is alkaline, you need to add sulfur. Read the rest of this entry »
